Sankar Anand has created a post on his blog to check antivirus installed on computer is working and good enough to detect intentionally created virus or not. First click on Start menu, click Run and type notepad, hit enter, save this empty text file with any name on the desktop. Goto desktop and open the just created text file and paste this without quotes "X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*". Now save file by pressing (ctr l+S), keyboard shortcut to save a file. Now if your antivirus program is running you won't be able to save file. When you tries to save file auto protect of antivirus delete the text file and shows the popup message displaying message of blocking "EICAR test string". So go and check your antivirus program.
