Why send SMS when you can chat on mobile instant messenger ?

Why send SMS when you can chat on mobile instant messenger ?
If you spend lots of time on your cell phone sending SMS to your friends. Well, chatting through your phone may be a better option for you. For one,it works out cheaper than sending a volley of text messages across.

Today most modern phones offer Java compatibility, email and MMS support, Internet connectivity via GPRS/EDGE and an intelligent operating system such as symbian which is more than enough for mobile instant messaging and if you are interested in chatting on Live Messenger or Google Talk with your phone, then there are lots of programs available out there and most of them are available free of cost. You can either download the application on your computer and then transfer to the mobile phone or directly download onto the your cell phone via GPRS. So if you can't wait to get started, here are some of the instant messenger you should be looking at.

1) Nimbuzz: Nimbuzz provides multiple connectivity with Live Messenger, Google Talk and Nimbuzz's own messaging service. Visit http://get.nimbuzz.com from your mobile browser to download the application. Once you've registered on Nimbuzz site, simply select the messaging service of your choice and you are ready to chat.

2) Instango: This nifty application promises connectivity with Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, MSN, ICQ and Jabber all in one. Jabber is one of the most popular open source clients that uses the XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol), also used in very famous Google Talk.
Instango uses a proxy server to connect to the Jabber service. This proxy server minimises traffic considerably. For example, if you're using Google Talk for an hour on the computer uses up to 1 MB of bandwidth, Instango will do the same in about 100 KB. This is quite important given the fact that most cellular providers charge you by the MB. Once you have downloaded and installed the application from http://www.instango.com, the next thing you need to do is configure it.

If you don't already have a Jabber ID, you should download and install the PSI Jabber client on your main computer from http://psi-im.org and then register a new Jabber account for yourself.

Digital identities for better online security

Windows Vista Cardspace Technology
Windows Cardspace brings us to the concept of digital identity. Windows cardspace aims to help you create and manage digital identities that can be used over the internet to register and login to websites, or basically conduct any sort of transaction. Such identity cards can either be self-issued-meaning that you can create your own or be offered by providers such as banks and employers. In essence, with cardspace, you can say goodbye to usernames and passwords. The next time you wish to login to a website, you merely send your information card to the site and you are in and you can also use the same card to login into multiple websites. Cardspace comes preinstalled with vista. If you don,t have Vista, you will have to download Microsoft's .net framework 3.0. Note that the net framework 3.0 will only install on Windows XP and newer operating systems. While Internet Explorer 7.0 is recomended, a third-extension written by Microsoft developers is already available for firefox.

Once you have completed the prerequisties, creating your own information card is quite simple. Click on the start button and select the control panel. Now double-click on the Windows Cardspace icon. Then click on the 'add card' option and fill in the required information and your card is ready to use. This card can now be sent to any websites for registration and logging in. Cardspace reduces the risk of being 'phished'(tricked into providing sensitive information over the internet to unverified sources) or key-logger (where a program runs in the background and picks up any usernames and passwords that you enter). Since the information card is stored in an encrypted formaton your computer, no other user, including yourself, from any other location can login under your alias. To use your digital identity from another PC, you will have to create a password-protected backup from the original computer. You can carry the backup on a USB stick.

Limitation: Now Cardspace technology in its initial stage and support for cardspace is currently low, you can expect it to pick up as more users migrate to Vista, Once that's done though, you won't have to pull out your credit card and manually key in the details ever again.

Create a new user account or login using your Information Card at sandbox.
