Adobe released beta version of Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR)

Adobe has, on 11 June 07, released a free beta version of Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) which was formerly code named Apollo. Adobe has marked a critical stage in its project to bring rich web applications to the desktop.AIR is an application runtime that works across all operating systems and allows developers use various tools like HTML/CSS, Ajax and Adobe’s Flash and Flex to facilitate the Rich Internet applications to the desktop. A full release is scheduled for the fourth quarter. The beta version of Adobe AIR and Adobe Air software Developer's Kit can be downloaded free from www.adobe.com/go/air .

New features in the beta include the SQLite embedded database, PDF support and stronger capabilities for JavaScript developers, Adobe said. The beta currently only works on Windows and Mac systems with support for Linux and other options scheduled to be added at a later date. Adobe also said that the new beta Flex 3 now supports AIR and that it has posted an add-in that for Dream Weaver CS3 that supports AIR.

Adobe recently announced its intention to release Adobe Flex as open source.
