Add Internet address bar to Windows Vista taskbar

You can add an Internet URL address bar to your Windows XP or Windows Vista taskbar. Doing so will let you type in URLs and launch Web pages without first launching a browser. It will also let you launch some Windows XP or Windows Vista applications in much the same way as you would via the Run menu (so you could type in notepad to launch the notepad or mspaint to launch Microsoft Paint). Here's how you add the address bar:

1. Right-click anywhere on the taskbar, select Toolbars, and then click Address.

2. The Address bar will appear on taskbar of your computer.

3. Type any web address & then click enter, to go that address or you can also select the recently opened site(saved in internet browser's cache) by clicking the arrow pointing downward on the right side of address as you often do on your internet browser.

4. You can also adjust the size of address bar by dragging the vertical lines visible on the taskbar to adjust the size to your requirement and if the vertical lines are not visible on the task bar, then your taskbar is locked. You can unlock it by right-clicking on the taskbar again and uncheck "Lock the Taskbar".

Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth

A nice little tweak for Windows XP or Windows Vista. Microsoft OS reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (may be for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)
Here's how to get it back:

Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc"

This opens the group policy editor.

Then go to: Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but go to 'Explain'tab and you will know the truth:"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to Zreo.
This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.
I have tested on Windows XP,Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista Beta 2 and rc2(currently using) also.
Please give me feedback about your results also.

Searching and Ranking in Google

When people search Google, they are asking the company to find every instance of the term in its index and rank the corresponding documents by their relevance.

1 The user types a search query, the typical query is two or three words, which can make finding the most relevant result challenging, roughly one in 10 queries is misspelled.

2 Before Google provides and information, it identifies the searcher’s location through his or her internet protocol address. The IP helps speed up the search by sending the request to the nearest data center and allows Google to identify geographically appropriate ads to show with search result.

3 The query is sent to the central network the central network and then redirected to the nearest data center.
4 At the data center, the search term is run through the index, matching terms are sent back to the central network, then to the user with a summary of the web page, called a “snippet”.

THE SECRET SAUCE

Google determines which web sites are most relevant to a search term by using its “secret sauce”, a formula that weighs more than 200 measurements, such as the number of times the search term appears on a web page, the number of visitors to the page and the Page Rank- the number of sites linking to the page and the popularity of those sites.

You can also check how your web site by the different Google datacenters by Google cache tool and other tests like Web Site Popularity Checker, Search Engine Position Checker, Keyword Suggestion Tool, Web Site Analysis etc. at http://www.sitesolutions.com/tools.asp

How Google Works

Google searches harness one of the most powerful supercomputers. A search, which typically takes less than a second, is the result of a complex journey that typically makes at least two stops, often thousands of miles apart.

1 Google creates its own version of the Internet, using automated programmers called Google bots, which crawl the web in search of new information. Web sites known to be important and frequently modified are scanned every few weeks.

2 Google bots feed key information from a Web page to Google’s central network: url, full text of the page, references to images and the other embedded files specific information the site owner creates about the page, called metadata.

3 At the central network, the information is indexed; every word that could be used in a search query is listed along with information referencing web sites where the word can be found.

4 The index is broken into “shards” and sent to data centers facilities made up of thousands of servers wired together around the world; because centers may have slightly different versions of the index, depending on when they received the last update, users in different places may get slightly different results for the same search.

5 Avoid resting your palms or wrists on any type of surface while typing. If your keyboard has a palm rest, use it only during breaks from typing.
6 While typing, use a light touch and keep your wrists straight.
7 When you're not typing, relax your arms and hands.

How to iron an expensive shirt

Find the tag on your shirt that indicates what it’s made of.

Plug in the iron and set the dial to the recommended setting for that fabric. 100 % cotton and linen need a high setting; wools and cotton blends call for medium heat; polyester, rayon, nylon, silk, acetate and acrylic all need a low heat setting.

Fill the iron with distilled water if you will be using the ‘steam’ setting on cottons or linens.

Iron the back of the collar first, then the front, taking care to iron in from the edges a little at a time to avoid creases.

Open cuffs fully. Iron inside first, then outside.

Iron sleeves after smoothing them flat to avoid creases. Do sleeve backs first, fronts second and take extra care on armhole seams.

Hangs shirt over board so that one front panel flat (collar at narrower end of board). Iron from shoulder to shirttail.

Rotate shirt over board so that you iron the back next, and the other front panel last.

Hang your warm shirt on a hanger immediately to avoid re-wrinkling it.

If you’ll be wearing a buttoned jacket all day and are short of time, you need only iron the collar, sleeves and top of the front.

If you’ll be wearing a sweater all day, iron only the collar.

If you don’t want sharp creases on your sleeves, use a sleeve-ironing attachment.

To Beat Pain, Find the Right Beat

To Beat Pain, Find the Right Beat
If you are stressed, depressed, in pain, anxious or want to boost your brain power and resolve, invest in an iPod. Music therapy is now being used to treat everything from autism to cancer. But the wider effect of music on our psyches is less well-publicized. Listening to music can help you to cope better with pain, exercise more effectively, perform stressful tasks, be less aggressive, eat less and shop differently. Indeed, if music were available in pill form, we’d all be popping it.

In some medical settings, “audio analgesic” is now derigueur. A study found listening to soothing classical music can reduce chronic pain by up to 21% and depression by up to 25%. Other studies show that patients exposed to music experience less intense pain and use lower dose of painkillers than those who suffer in silence. Indeed, the director of an US hospital’s coronary care unit once said half an hour of classical music produces the same effect as 10 milligrammes of Valium.

Any music –from Vivaldi to The Verve will do, as long as it is something you like. According to one Arts Council report, rheumatoid arthritis sufferers who listened to just 20 minutes of their favourite music daily reported a significant reduction in pain. The mere act of singing, meanwhile, was shown to increase the quality of life of people with progressive dementia.

  • Baby won’t sleep? Try Mozart piano concerto-babies, even in utero, have been shown to respond to claming classical music.

  • Dieters can try Mozart or Enya (slow and soothing) at meal times.

  • Those with high BP, try Fur Elise by Beethoven- studies show soothing music can lower BP and stabiles the heart rate.

  • One study found that short bursts of Mozart’s Sonata K448 decreases epileptic attacks.

Windows XP SP1 support comes to an end

Is anyone out there still running Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)? If there is, then you should know that support for the operating system is officially coming to an end, October 10. While Microsoft only guarantees support for a service pack 12 months after the following service pack's launch, SP1 was supported for over two years considering SP2's August 2004 release.

When SP1 made its debut on September 9, 2002, it included several new features and security enhancements. The pack contained over 300 patches in one 133MB installation, and it included USB 2.0 support. In response to a legal battle with Sun, SP1 also installed the Java Virtual Machine although Microsoft's own virtual machine was still included in the release. Another user-friendly/anti-trust feature of the service pack was that it finally gave customers a dialog where they could modify the default applications for certain tasks. Located in the Add or Remove Programs window, the "Set program access and defaults" tab allowed users to change defaults settings for e-mail, instant messaging, web browsing, multimedia, and the operating system's virtual machine. In Windows Vista, the section has been renamed from "Set program access and defaults" to "Default Programs", and it can be found on the Start Menu.

Microsoft has not yet announced when support for Windows XP SP2 will end.

Search Mash: Google's another search site

Google has created a search site without any Google branding to test new features. The site, SearchMash, has a simple blue and white interface with a search bar and an option to click on "popular searches." Once keywords are entered, the results page features links to results running down the left side of the page and the top three image results on the right side.
SearchMash also lets you click on a result and drag and drop it to change the order. Also, when a link is clicked on, the user is offered the option of opening the listings in the current window or a new window, seeing more pages from the Web site or finding similar pages. Additional results are added to the bottom of the original results page by clicking on a "more web pages" link.
With SearchMash, Google "plans to test user interface ideas without Google's brand somehow skewing the tests. Go to http://www.searchmash.com/

Get a Free Xbox 360

If you want an XBOX 360, but can't afford to shell out $500 and more, there are legit ways to get one free. Though completing one of these free offers can take quite a bit more time and effort than buying one in store, it's very worth it.

Steps:

There are many different websites offering a free XBOX 360. I would recommend 3604free. It is widely considered by far the most safe and secure, and very highly rated among users. It also offers premium systems, when most other websites offer basic systems. Last, it offers different configuration options (e.g., one two controllers and one game or one controllers and two games). Make sure to use your actual information.

To register, go to: http://www.3604free.com/ Then choose your account type. There are two different account types, points and referrals. In the points account type, you get different amount of points of each offer you complete. Offers range from 30-100 points, though most are in the 60 point range. In the referrals type, you have to refer other people a certain amount of other people to sign up and also complete an offer. I would recommend the referral system, especially if you have other friends who are also interested in getting a free XBOX 360.

Just goto www.3604free.com/terms.php to find out how many points or referrals your need for the different types of configuration types. Completing an offer. Don't be afraid of this step. There are many offers that you might be interested in such as netflix trials, gamefly trials and many others. If you're looking for completely free trials (some you have to pay around $5) the two best are the true.com trial and the real arcade trial. Remember to read the requirements for completing the offer you choose so you can make sure it counts. Refer your friends. Note: this step is only necessary for people who chose referral based accounts. Refer enough friends to fulfill your requirements.

Make sure your friends sign up and complete an offer of their own. Get more points. (This step is only necessary for people who chose a points based account). Continue completing offers until you have enough points to redeem your 360.

Enjoy your free XBOX 360!

Note: This offer is for residents of Canada and U.S. only.

Change Windows Time into your Name

Have you ever wondered how to change the Windows Time into your name? For example, instead of 3:05 PM, 3:05 (Your name). AM and PM would be replaced by "Your Name". If you want to do this, then you are in the right place.

Steps:
First Go to Start and click on the Control Panel Open Regional and Language Options, if you are in the Classic View, else click on Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options, then click on Regional Options. Then Click on the Customize Button in the Regional Options Button. Now Click on a Tab named "Time". Then retype AM Symbol, and PM Symbol, to your desired word or your name (In this article, its about your name). Then click on "OK" Again Click On "OK" Button.

Tips:
It is not necessary to change AM-PM into your name, you can change it to any word, you want.

Things You'll Need:
Microsoft Windows Operating System

Note:
Remember! You can't change the AM-PM Symbol into any Number. You just have to type any word.
